Friday, Saturday, August 3 and 4 The weekend orientation will be co-taught by Dr. Rose Viggiano, Carol Fabricatore, Hanta Rasamimanana and Deborah Ross.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, August 6 – 8
Travel to Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. There will be no formal program activities, so participants can rest and adjust for two days.

Thursday, August 9
Nine-hour car travel to Ranomafana National Park. On arrival, participants will settle into housing.

Friday, August 10
Participants will meet primatologist Dr. Patricia Wright for an orientation. She will discuss the important research being done at Centre ValBio. Participants will be introduced to scientists working at the center and will be taken on a tour of the rain forest. (5 hours orientation)

Saturday, Sunday, August 11 – 12
The weekend will be spent exploring with science guides on day and night walks in the forest. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the ecosystem in Madagascar. (8 hours observation)

Monday, August 13
Participants will visit villages and meet the children and observe and participate with Hanta collaborators in art/science workshops. (5 hours teaching)

Tuesday–Thursday, August 14 – 15
Teams will attend village school/community gatherings to develop arts-integrated curriculum with Hanta collaborators. Participants will keep field notes recording their impressions of the school and the development of their lesson plans. (5 hours a day for 2 days, totaling 20 hours teaching)

Friday, August 16
Tour of the rainforest with the children guided by local naturalists. Art workshop in the forest on the lookout platform. (10 hours teaching)

Saturday, Sunday, August 18 – 19
Observe art and crafts created by local artisans. (8 hours observation)

Monday, August 20th
Tour of secondary forest with naturalist guide or 4-hour hike to visit a local village.

Tuesday, August 21 Exhibition of artworks created by students and participants at Centre ValBio. (Preparation and hanging of art show; 3-hour final project)

Wednesday August 22
Portfolio presentations. Participants will share their experiences and lesson plans with the group (3-hour final project). Journals and curricula will be submitted.

Thursday August 23
Field trip to Anja, community reserve to explore an entirely different ecosystem. Visit to women’s silk weaving cooperative.

Friday. August 24
Drive back to Antananarivo.

Wednesday, Thursday, August 25 – 26 Days to explore city. Travel to airport for 1:30 am flight to New York.
