Set in the birthplace of the Roman Letter and Western typographic tradition, SVA’s Design Rome, our annual summer type, typography and design workshop will increase your knowledge and appreciation of classical Italian inscription and contemporary Italian graphic design. Open to all advanced design students and professionals, you will learn how the Roman letter developed, where and through which means it was advanced as the standard Western writing form, and you will conceive and design a project that reflects your observations and experiences in this remarkable eternal city.

The Roman letter, vernacular signage and other typographic explorations will be a trigger for your own type and typography. Throughout the workshop there will be class journeys through the streets of Rome, guided tours to museums, libraries, archives and ancient sites, as well as visits to and with contemporary designers.

The final project – produced in any medium (print, digital, video, etc.) will be your interpretation of some aspect of the Roman culture that introduces others to the wonders of the city as a design inspiration and creative influence. In past workshops students have developed custom typefaces, guidebooks, anthologies of Roman artifacts and ephemera. The creative options are unlimited. In an entrepreneurial spirit, anything you make should have the potential of reaching a broad audience too.

Design Rome will introduce you to new people, fascinating artists and designers and perhaps change your own view on the making and practice of design. All classes are held Monday through Saturday with plenty of time allotted for personal exploration. Workshop participants have individual rooms in a three-star hotel in the historical center of Rome, just around the corner from the Pantheon and only minutes from all the most exciting Roman landmarks and sights.

Note: A video interview and samples of your work are required for acceptance to this program. Participants must supply their own Macintosh laptop (MacBook) with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop installed and a digital camera, as well as equipment to download images from the camera to laptop.
